Introduction: Nepal is under environmental and economic crisis. Poverty, poor sanitation and health, lack of education, environmental degradation are major factors behind the hardship and plights of the majority of Nepali people. To achieve appropriate and sustainable development requires formulation of economic, social and environmental policies and their effective implementation. In the context of prevailing economic liberalization in the country, it is very difficult to imagine all round development of the country by the efforts of the government only. Therefore, for sustainable development of the country, private and non-government organizations (NGOs) can contribute in a significant way. Through such non-government institutions, appropriate utilization of available resources through active mobilization and participation of people for the sustainable development could become possible. Specially, environmental problems, which have become a global issue today, can be curtailed by promotion of indigenous technology, clean technology transfer, and intensive research and development activities. In such endeavors, non-governmental organizations can play a crucial role. In essence, realizing the importance of apolitical, non-profit social organization in poverty alleviation and environment protection through participatory training and income generation activities, co-ordination, promotion, and application of environmental and technical knowledge, and facilitation of technology transfer, Center for Environmental Technology and Economic Development (CETED) has been established by bringing together professionals from different backgrounds under one umbrella.
