Nepal is under environmental and economic crisis. Poverty, poor sanitation and health, lack of education, environmental degradation are major factors behind the hardship and plights of the majority of Nepali people. To achieve appropriate and sustainable development requires formulation of economic, social and environmental policies and their effective implementation. In the context of prevailing economic liberalization in the country, it is very difficult to imagine all round development of the country by the efforts of the government only. Therefore, for sustainable development of the country, private and non-government organizations (NGOs) can contribute in a significant way. 

The fundamental objectives of CETED

To conduct research and development works to develop appropriate environmental technology and facilitate technology diffusion and transfer.
To manage natural resources to maintain ecological balance.
To assist poverty alleviation through income generating activities.
To carry out participatory training in matters related to natural resources management, pollution control and poverty alleviation.
To co-ordinate with national and international organizations of similar objectives and nature and generate technical assistance and funds.
